I am very concerned about one part of the this new cyber school bill. The part that allows the PDE to decide if a cyber school teacher's time serving in a cyber school will count toward a level 2 certification.

A teacher can only teach for a limited number of years on a level 1 certification. Then the teacher either needs to get a level 2 or they can not continue to teach. By eliminating the time spent in a cyber school teachers may be effectively killing their teaching career if they choose to teach in a a cyber environment. This would make me think twice before I would consider working at such a place.

I do think that a blended approach to teaching (cyber and traditional) is the wave of the future. So these cyber teachers may be ahead of the curve and may be able to teach the traditional teacher a number of new things.

What we may need to do is make two types of level 2 certifications. One for a traditional teacher that show that they are accomplished in managing a classroom and the teaching skills required in that setting. Then a level 2 for cyber school teachers that says they are accomplished in teaching courses online and the skills needed to do that.

Some skills overlap, others do not. Both types of teachers can learn from each other. I wouldn't want to throw a cyber teacher into a classroom if they have no experience in that setting and think that they will succeed. On the other had the same is true if a traditional teacher is thrown into an online class.

Lets work together to make education the best it can be for all students. Every teacher has something to offer. Put the right people in the right positions and you will have success. That is true in any business and also applies to education.
